Do you catch errors through subtitles, menus, books, blog posts or business articles? Have you considered a work from home career in proofreading? The pandemic has made working from home almost a necessity, so there’s never been a better time than NOW for you to become an online proofreader.
Proofreading Academy’s Become a Proofreader course is a fantastic course that is designed to help you learn the ins and outs of professional English writing. And unlike the other online proofreading courses out there, this comes with a feature of GUARANTEED WORK.
That’s right. After you complete and pass the proofreading course, you can join the sister company and proofread work they send you… no marketing on your part!
In this review, I will try to give you all the helpful information you need to know about this course.

Well, I’ve been to college and worked a few different jobs, but nothing stuck. Not to mention the commuting expenses made it to where I was barely able to live paycheck to paycheck. That cycle is very draining, so I decided that I needed a change.
I researched through Pinterest and Google, trying to find remote work from home jobs that were legit. I came across the proofreading profession. Reading has always been beloved hobby of mine and I’m a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to details (and errors).
After the research I did over this and other proofreading courses, I knew the low upfront costs and guaranteed work were too good to pass up.
The course itself costs less than the other proofreading courses, plus there’s no extra costs for test retakes or joining the third-party company.
I was passed suspecting it all was a scam, but I couldn’t get over the risk involved with marketing and getting my business off the ground. How long would it take to make money? And what if, after this, I decide to focus on something else?
The guaranteed work option sold me. I wouldn’t have to do any marketing (what a relief). I could work from anywhere with my laptop. And I would be able to set my own schedule and work how often I wanted to.
I would just have to get through the course…
HOW IS THIS COURSE ORGANIZED?
The Become A Proofreader course by Proofreading Academy is all completely online and easily accessible through the company website. You do need a laptop with the latest version of Microsoft Word. As soon as you complete the purchase, you are presented with a slideshow and module list:
Module 1: Intro Proofreading Module 2: Work Flow of Microsoft Word Module 3: Common Spelling Mistakes Module 4: Grammar Module 5: Punctuation Module 6: Other Common Mistakes Module 7: Style Module 8: Academic Proofreading Module 9: Referencing & Citations Module 10: Formatting
Your progress is tracked by percentage until the big final test at the end. Don’t worry, there are several quiz questions throughout the sections to help you with the end-of-module tests. This all made it easier for me to learn the different information so that I was able to pass the final test. The passing grade is set at 80% or higher if you want to move on to the sister company for paid work. Otherwise, it’s up to you.
If you don’t pass the first time, you can simply let them know that you want to retake it. No extra costs.
HOW DOES THE “GUARANTEED WORK” PART WORK?
They are partnered with a sister company out of the UK called Proofed, Inc. It is all online so you would just need a relatively new laptop with Microsoft Word, and you can be contracted as a freelancer. After onboarding you are set up with a portal and you can either pick up documents from the qeue or be assigned documents. The qeue was kind of fun for me because you would refresh the browser and try to grab new documents that you might want to work on before somebody else snatches them.
There are deadlines. You would proofread it to Proofed’s standards and submit it.
They review the first ten documents, which have a smaller word count, to find out if you are doing good enough to be left alone. If you great at spotting all the errors, then it’s smooth sailing. They start giving you higher pay documents to work on and more of them. This could be a great side or even full-time gig.
It is freelancing, which means you could also work on other side projects not with the company. In fact, there is a current freelancer who freelances for two different proofreading companies and still has individual projects. The possibilities are endless.
WHAT KIND OF DOCUMENTS WILL YOU PROOFREAD?
The course and sister company focus on proofreading all sorts of academic essays and dissertations.
But when I freelanced for the company, I worked on simple essays, poems, resumes, CVs, technical dissertations, and interest letters to teaching programs or college. There was even a wine menu in qeue at one point!
No two days were the same and it helps you gain experience.
WHAT ABOUT THE PAY?
This is the fun part.
They pay by the word count of a document, not by the hour, through direct deposit in pounds. Every week usually cycling on Sunday.
Being paid weekly is fantastic because you don’t have to wait weeks or a whole month. Also, the flexible pay makes this a great side gig because you’ll be able to manage how much work you should do for the week.
On average you can make up to $1300 per month (as per their website), maybe even more if you work on special projects.
WHAT IF I DON’T WANT TO WORK WITH THE SISTER COMPANY?
The guaranteed work is the great thing that sets this apart from other proofreading courses. But it’s an OPTION. You can complete the course, receive the certificate, and go about your life.
This is great if you are a teacher or student needing to brush up on your grammar/proofreading skills.
But if you are wanting to become a proofreader and start a career in proofreading, I highly recommend onboarding with the sister company. It’s like paid extensive training, you gain experience and find out what types of proofreading documents you like the most.
It’s possible you may not like proofreading academic essays and dissertations as much as you thought you did. You can go on your own and niche down (like I did).
Either way, the course is worth every penny.
ARE THERE CONS?
The course is reasonably priced, online at your own pace and fairly easy to get through. There is an option for guaranteed work, work is flexible, and you get paid every week. So, is there a bad side?
Both the course and company are based out of the UK. So, if you’re like me living in the U.S., then the time difference will affect the admin team getting back to you and deadlines.
Also, the onboarding process unfortunately takes a while. So just make sure you are prepared for a wait time.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS AND HOW HAS IT HELPED ME?
Learning any skill is valuable and proofreading is no different. The written language is everywhere, therefore, knowing how to make it sound more professional benefits everyone. I don’t know how many times I’ve seen somebody misspell a word or use the wrong homonym in a business article or a social media post and see the negative effects it has on the person, brand or conversation.
Going through this experience has made me realize I can use my perfectionist side to help those people say what they need to say in the best way possible.
Working from home or anywhere is great, too (even if it is a necessity). No commute, I am my own boss, and I can grow my business as little or as big I see fit. One of my favorite places to proofread is outside on my patio. The freedom compared to any past jobs is indescribable.
Don’t get me wrong, there is a certain mindset that you need to tap into. But the course teaches you a few techniques, such as taking breaks at different intervals because your eyes can skip over an error without realizing.
The freedom, the experience, and training are all the benefits that make this course absolutely worth the cost.
